From Manual Checks to Smart Monitoring: Nick’s Journey to Efficient Water Management.

Bondonga Farm, a mixed farming property in Orange, New South Wales, has embraced a modern approach to farming thanks to the NSW Government’s Farms of the Future program. In a recent case study, we follow Nick, the farm’s owner, as he rethinks his operations, pinpoints challenges, and adopts cutting-edge technology to improve water management. Nick’s experience highlights how Agtech can address key operational issues and pave the way for a more sustainable farm.

Prioritising Water Management with Agtech Training

Nick’s journey began with the Monitoring Your Farm with Agtech training program offered by Farms of the Future. During the course, he learned how to map out his property, assess connectivity needs, and use Agtech to address specific issues. Through this training, Nick identified water management as a priority, given its critical role in supporting both livestock and domestic needs on the farm. His previous method of tracking water—a manual float stick—was time-consuming and left him without insights while away from the property.

Implementing Smart Water Monitoring Solutions

Determined to resolve his water management pain points, Nick adopted the Farmbot solar monitoring system. This advanced system replaced the analogue float stick and allowed Nick to monitor water levels from anywhere. The Farmbot system continuously tracks tank levels and sends real-time alerts to his phone, providing timely notifications on any unexpected changes. Now, instead of manually checking tanks, Nick can quickly spot and resolve issues before they become major problems, saving both time and resources.

Safeguarding Livestock and Ensuring Peace of Mind

Reliable water access is essential for Nick’s livestock. Any interruption in water supply could lead to serious impacts on animal welfare and farm finances. With the Farmbot system in place, Nick no longer has to worry about disruptions to his water system. This technology not only secures his livestock’s water needs but also allows him to step away from the farm with confidence, knowing he can monitor and address issues remotely.

Nick’s story is an inspiring example of how farmers can harness Agtech to solve practical challenges and improve their quality of life. By combining knowledge from the Monitoring Your Farm with Agtech training with new technology, Nick has transformed Bondonga Farm’s water management practices.
