Mara & Anthony Grills

AMG Grazing, Waverley

Mara, Anthony and their three children breed cattle and sheep across five properties in the Guyra area. Water tank monitors and remote pump control ensure reliable supply on all properties. An auto drafter delivers efficiencies when handling and processing sheep. The panel reader and weigh indicator system streamline stock inductions, eliminates errors, while also improving biosecurity. A soil probe monitor captures accurate soil moisture data to help manage inputs.

Challenges

  • Monitoring water-supply over the 5 properties was time consuming, stressful and costly.
  • Manual recording of regular stock inductions and movements was inefficient and prone to errors.
  • Inability to accurately monitor soil moisture meant pasture management was open to interpretation, and unnecessary inputs.

Actions

  • Mara reached out to the Farms of The Future team for advice and attended a workshop.
  • The Grills identified connectivity issues across the properties and searched for appropriate tech solutions.
  • They implemented strategies that improved data collection and collation, to future-proof stock management processes

Solution

Mara and Anthony installed water and soil monitoring sensors, automated bore pump and stock management systems, all connected through wireless and satellite. Solar was connected to the cattle yards to charge a deep cycle battery for the eID reader. Their Agtech includes:

01.

Tank water monitors and automated bore pump to ensure animal health.

02.

An auto drafter and panel reader to increase productivity and improve flock/stock quality through the implementation of eID technology.

03.

Soil moisture probe to obtain accurate soil data to better manage inputs.

Benefits

  • The remote pump and tank monitoring on additional properties essentially halves the visits to check the welfare of their stock, saving time and money.
  • The auto drafter simplifies and streamlines flock handling, creating a safer work environment, allowing their teenage children Brooke, Darcy and Abbey to work independently of their parents.
  • Weigh indicator and panel reader improves biosecurity, streamlines induction, significantly improves data collection and increases productivity.
